Kiko Cosmetics

There’s a new beauty player in town and it hails from Italia! Kiko Cosmetics has opened its doors in different locations all over LA, as well as New York and New Jersey. I visited the Torrance store in the Del Amo shopping center, which first opened in October of 2015, where the lovely Lindsey and Brittany were gracious enough to let me play around with the gorgeous Kiko products all morning.

First, a little more introduction

For those of you who are not yet familiar with the brand, Kiko started in Milan, and is a very popular brand across Europe already. Kim Kardashian obviously got the memo about the effectiveness of Kiko’s skincare line when she snapped herself using their scrub + peel wipes.  The brand offers an amazing selection of high-quality products at an accessible price point. In beauty, we refer to this as the “masstige” segment – somewhere in between mass brands (Maybelline, Revlon) and prestige brands (think brands sold in department stores like NARS or Tom Ford).
On average, Kiko’s prices fall in the range below

Eyeshadow (singles): $12-$14
Lipsticks: $8-$15
Foundation: $14-$22
Skincare: $9-$45

With a brand like Kiko, you can try the products in store and get high quality products without the high price tag.

The store experience

The single most frustrating thing that I find about shopping for affordable cosmetics at drugstores is that you can’t try the products.  Finding a great shade of lipstick is hard enough as it is, but without being able to try, it becomes pretty much impossible.  The luxury of being able to experience the products, play with the shades and colors, before buying had been reserved for department store counters and Sephora shopping in the past.  Now, there’s an alternative.  With a brand like Kiko, you can try the products in store and get high quality products without the high price tag. You also get the benefit of in-person service, whereas drugstores makeup cannot usually offer that service.

Kiko Products

Newest Kiko Collection by Ross Lovegrove

The first thing you will notice upon walking into the Kiko store is the presentation of the products: it’s clean, well laid-out, with a vast array of colors and variety to choose from. Toward the front of the store is the newest Kiko collection: new products with packaging designed by Ross Lovegrove.  This line is perfect for summer, as it includes beautiful bronzers, mascaras, eyeshadow pencils, highlighters, and a lip oil that comes in three scents: Coconut, Vanilla, and Grapefruit.  I’m a huge fan of beautiful packaging, and I ended up wanting to take this entire collection home.

After chatting with the makeup artists, I learned that some of Kiko’s best selling products include the Water Eyeshadow, Skin Tone Corrector Primer, and the new Velvet Passion Matte Lipstick.

My personal picks

I created the two looks below using the following Kiko products: In the Shade Eyeshadow and Kajal in Anthracite and Metallic Rose, Water Eyeshadow in Champagne as a highlighter on the cheekbones, and cleaned and highlighted my brow bone using the Perfect Eyes Duo Highlighter and Pencil.

The two lip colors I have on are the Gossamer Emotion Creamy Lipstick in #117 (Papaya) – a bright orange that I am loving for the summer, and Kiko’s newest Velvet Passion Matte Lipstick in #307 (Cyclamen Pink).

If you are a newbie or beginner to using eyeshadow and/or eyeliner, you can’t go wrong with the dual ended eyeshadow and kajal liner. The formulas glide on beautifully, and the jumbo pencil format is a very easy to use liner that is easier to handle than say, a liquid eyeliner. The eyeshadow and liner colors are also already paired for you, so no guesswork there. A little tip and trick I learned in the Kiko Store is to use a concealer pencil to help define your brows and conceal any hair in between tweezing/waxing.

Finally, I am officially obsessed with these two lip colors – a bright matte pink that I’ve been looking for, and the matte formula is not at all drying and very comfortable to wear. The bright orange is also something that I’ve been meaning to try – this formula is more hydrating, has a glossy finish and lasted through the afternoon without having to reapply.
